Fisheries Biologist


Vertex is currently accepting applications for a full-time, permanent Fisheries Biologist in Sherwood Park, Alberta. The successful candidate will have experience within various disciplines and field projects with a focus on lake and stream assessments for small-and large-scale projects, performing fisheries assessments and water quality monitoring during crossings of minor and major rivers across western Canada.   • Diploma and/or Bachelor’s degree in Aquatic Biology, Environmental Science, Biological Science, Fish and Wildlife or related field
  • Minimum two years of relevant experience in the environmental field; Preference will be given to those with consulting experience
  • A registered member with a relevant professional organization (i.e. P.Biol., BIT, R.BIT or R.Biol) and registration as an RPBio or RBTech under College of Applied Biology would be considered an asset
  • Strong understanding of and ability to interpret environmental regulations, guidelines, requirements, and standards (i.e. Alberta Water Act and Federal Fisheries Act, Changes in and about a Stream))
  • Understanding of aquatic ecosystems in Western Canada
  • Demonstrated experience completing riverine and lake habitat assessments for pipeline and transmission line projects
  • Comprehensive knowledge with QAES (Qualified Aquatic Environmental Specialist) and QP (Qualified Professional) assessments, including electrofishing and other sampling methods.
  • Experience conducting water quality monitoring and construction monitoring for horizontal directional drilling pipeline crossings, including mitigation and spill response
  • Strong conceptual, organizational, problem solving, research, and oral presentation skills; strong written communication skills
  • Strong leadership skills to lead, manager and conduct aquatic resource assessments and related work
  • Experience operating in a dynamic consulting environment that requires flexibility and teamwork; and an ability/interest to work in the field, occasionally in remote locations for extended periods of time
  • Wildlife identification skills considered an asset
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel required
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean abstract
  • Willing to travel within western Canada when required
  • Industry safety tickets (H2S Alive, First Aid, Ground Disturbance)


  • Monitor, record, and chart dynamic environmental parameters that may impact aquatic ecosystems and/or organisms
  • Conduct various assessments up to and including assessments for pipeline, padsite, access roads and transmission line projects
  • Conduct water quality monitoring and construction monitoring for trenched and trenchless crossings
  • Lead or assist with fish habitat field assessments and mapping for various types of developments including but not limited to upstream and downstream oil and gas; mining; forestry and agriculture
  • Fish sampling techniques including, but not limited to electrofishing, seining and minnow trapping
  • Demonstrate knowledge of provincial and federal aquatic legislation and regulatory agencies (i.e. Water Sustainability Act, Alberta Wildlife Act, BC Wildlife Act, Species at Risk Act, Fisheries Act, British Columbia Environmental Assessment Act, Alberta Environmental Assessment Act, Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, British Columbia Oil and Gas Commission, National Energy Board, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Transportation Canada, Alberta Energy Regulator and Alberta Environment and Parks)
  • Assist in the development of environmental impact assessments, biological monitoring plans, enhanced protection plan and environmental assessments
  • Prepare in the preparation of technical reports
  • Field work in remote locations within Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan
  • Other duties as directed by your manager

Personnel and Logistics Management

    • Supervise, mentor, and provide technical support to intermediate and junior staff located or working primarily on projects and assignments under your care and control
    • Oversee and steward Vertex’s safety policies and procedures for all staff under your charge
    • Evaluate and procure staff (with management input) for efficient project execution

Technical Requirements

  • Extensive experience in the regulatory arena for environmental consulting projects within Alberta, Saskatchewan, and B.C.
  • Working knowledge – understand, remain current, and ability to interpret environmental regulations, guidelines, requirements, and standards as required by Vertex business and client base
  • Understanding of the EPEA approval requirements that necessitate environmental oversight or consultancy for execution and reporting of both Insitu and mineable oil sands
  • Provide technical guidance to clients and staff or ensure clients are connected to a Vertex subject matter expert when required
  • Reporting and review (in areas of practice) of technical reports


  • This position will be based out of our Sherwood Park office with travel.
