Junior Environmental Technician

OVERVIEW

Vertex is currently accepting applications for one full-time, Junior Environmental Technician in Calgary, Alberta. Ideal candidates will have a strong understanding of construction monitoring (soil salvage and reclamation) and environmental inspection. The successful candidates will also possess a keen eye for detail, demonstrate strong technical writing skills, be critical thinkers, and will enjoy working in the field for extended periods of time. Reporting to an Environmental Manager, the Junior Environmental Technician must be someone who is willing to travel and take additional responsibilities as the position/project evolves.

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Diploma or University Degree in environmental science, reclamation, or another related field
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in environmental consulting with a focus in oil and gas
  • Knowledge of Western Canadian soils; experience classifying soils is advantageous
  • Knowledge of wildlife classification; experience classifying wildlife habitat, conducting wildlife monitoring or preconstruction nest
  • Understanding of remote area navigation; experience using maps, compass, GPS and aerial photos for navigation in the field is advantageous
  • Experience conducting field and reporting portions of Phase I/II/III ESA’s
  • Basic understanding, introductory knowledge of, and ability to interpret environmental regulations, guidelines and standards
  • Demonstrated ability to drive trucks and/or a variety of off-road vehicles in rough terrain
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean abstract
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office with advanced knowledge of Word and Excel
  • Demonstrated leadership, communication and decision-making skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to problem solve
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Willingness to gain field experience in remote locations
  • Willingness to work in the field for extended periods of time
  • Willingness to travel within Western Canada, as required

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conducting project work related to construction monitoring including classifying soils, wildlife identification/sweeps, site reclamation
  • Data management (data tables, photographs, inputting field data sheets, analysis and interpretation)
  • Reporting (all types, styles and formats that Vertex’s produces)
  • Pre-construction wildlife sweeps and wetland assessments
  • Environmental site assessments
  • Detailed site assessments
  • Developing and maintaining key relationships with clients
  • Remediation and reclamation
  • Groundwater sampling and monitoring
  • Vegetation surveys
  • Historical spill clean-up

LOCATION

  • This position will be based out of our Calgary, Alberta office
