Senior Environmental Scientist

OVERVIEW

Vertex is currently accepting applications for one full-time, permanent Senior Environmental Scientist in Calgary, Alberta. The successful candidate will be responsible for completing upstream oil and gas and industrial projects in accordance within Vertex guidelines and project scopes. This ideal candidate will have proven experience in Phase ll Environmental Site Assessment (ESA), reclamation to detailed site assessments (DSA). This individual will play a critical role in the execution of all aspects of the project while delivering a cost-effective approach that exceeds our client’s expectations. This is primarily a field base position with some office work.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Diploma or higher education related to civil or environmental engineering or other related discipline, with a professional designation
  • Minimum 3 years of environmental work experience in the following areas:
    • Detailed site assessments
    • Soil salvage and reclamation monitoring
    • Soil and vegetation assessments
    • Phase I, Phase II and Phase III Environmental Site Assessments
    • Groundwater monitoring
    • Spill response
  • Project management experience is an asset
  • Experience in managing upstream environmental assessment and remediation projects
  • Strong leadership skills within a multidisciplinary team environment
  • Experience with alternative remediation and risk assessment strategies
  • Experience working with multiple regulatory agencies in Western Canada
  • Experience managing relationships with municipalities, First Nation communities, and other government entities
  • A member in good standing of an applicable professional association
  • Willingness to work in the field for extended periods of time;
  • Willingness to travel within Western Canada as required
  • Excellent communication and technical reporting skills
  • Strong time management and organizational skills

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Spend up to 80% of work hours performing technical field support on environmental projects
  • Environmental monitoring & inspection
  • Phase ll Environmental Site Assessment
  • Reclamation
  • Detailed Site Assessment
  • Spill response
  • Water well & groundwater assessments
  • Regulatory submissions
  • Soil and vegetation assessments
  • Soil salvage and reclamation monitoring
  • Responsible for project coordination, cost control and project scoping to ensure effectively versatile solutions are developed to meet client’s regulatory needs and budgets;
  • Responsible for both field and office execution of environmental projects with an emphasis on field work
  • Responsible to build both internal and external relationships within Vertex, with regulators and clients to effectively develop and manage projects within the environmental business unit.

  • This position will be based out of our Calgary, Alberta office or surrounding areas
