Sustainable Peat Harvest Operation

Objective

Vertex was retained by a client to provide regulatory application guidance to support the harvesting of peat moss located in Northern Alberta.

Approach

Vertex successfully achieved a path to regulatory compliance under the 2017 Peat Policy, with Alberta Environment and Parks, through a combination of technical environmental review, field program design and execution, and direct engagement with Alberta Environment and Parks. Vertex utilized our experienced regulatory specialists in conjunction with our environmental experts to compile an application that meets the 2017 Peat Policy requirements, which includes Water Act Approval requirements.

Results

Vertex performed exploration and assessment of approximately 722.3 hectares of the peat development area, the crew worked with field guides for assessments, providing detailed mapping to support consultation. The project successfully synergized multiple disciplines within one project to achieve regulatory compliance, including Aquatics, Water Quality, Hydrology, Soils, Vegetation, Wildlife, Regulatory Support and Liaison

Project Recognition

  • It’s a project council has worked on for a number of years. East Prairie has an abundance of peat moss. It will bring much-needed employment and revenue. It’s very good news.

    - Gerald Cunningham, Settlement Administrator
  • The project is not as simple as it sounds where Sun Gro can go in and harvest easily. The proposed operation comprises five separate bog fields with a cumulative area of 722.3 hectares. The project also involves the construction of access roads, haul roads, drainage ditches, peat harvesting fields and staging areas
