We are proud to announce that Vertex has been approved and is now recognized as a Gold Shovel Standard Certified contractor. This program recognizes those companies with a Safety Management System set up to ensure safe excavation practices for the protection of buried assets and those working around them.
Gold Shovel Standard is a non-profit organization that fills an industry gap by providing third-party confirmation of baseline Safety Management Systems for the protection of buried assets, and fair and transparent metrics for damage prevention. Gold Shovel Standard certified organizations are recognized to be best-in-class. Gold Shovel Standard provides two very basic services that fill a gap met nowhere else:
- A third-party confirmation of an in-place Safety Management System (SMS) for the protection of buried assets
- An ambitious effort driven by industry (including contractors and locators) to create fair and transparent metrics for damage prevention similar to other safety metrics (LTIR, EMR, TRIR, DART, etc.), a gap filled by no other program
Gold Shovel Standard has already become a permanent fixture in much of North America as industry has rapidly embraced this ambitious program. The rate of adoption has dramatically increased since its implementation, and numbers of new members and participants are expanding at a healthy rate. Notably, GSS has been embraced by some of the largest telecom companies, gas and electric utilities, pipeline operators and a variety of municipalities
